The consumption of beer and alcohol is interwoven throughout human history. Beer has been produced almost as long as bread has been. In Europe, during the Middle Ages, it was a good alternative to unsanitary drinking water because of the boiling process during brewing which eliminated most germs. Beer was also a good source of nutrients and food value (Yenne, 2007). The consumption of beer was not simply pleasurable, but was a necessary part of an individual’s diet. This notion of the nutritional benefits of beer is prevalent in the needs of the consumer until as late as the twentieth century.
